Carr & Day & Martin

1765 - Established and started manufacturing in the UK - It all started in 1765 when Mr Day, a Doncaster hairdresser, met an old soldier who gave Day a recipe for making boot blacking which he had developed to polish the boots of his superior officers. “Make it like this” said Martin the solider “and you’ll make a fortune!” Very quickly Mr Day realised how good the product was and together they opened a little shop at 97, High Holburn, London in 1770.

1800 - Belvoir soap first produced and still made to the same formula today - Mr Day had a flair for publicity and splendid black horses were used to draw the Day & Martin carriages. Apart from the horses themselves, the firm had wonderful stables and equipment. An interest in equestrian products thus ensued and the first equestrian product was made – the Belvoir Bar Soap. It remains the first glycerine bar soap on the market to this day.

1820 - First Royal Warrant granted by King George IV and retained today through the reigns of 8 monarchs

1923 - Day & Martins sell the company to Carr & Son - By this time they had established world-wide overseas trade and the product range now also included floor polish, harness composition, metal polish and ‘shoe and leather dressings of every kind’.

1950's - Product innovation and development - By 1950, Carr & Day & Martin as it was now known, had re-designed the packaging of their entire product range. Product development continued and Carr & Day & Martin became known for their innovation and during a tin plate shortage in the 50’s launched a general purpose oil in a disposable tube.

2015 - 250th anniversary making them the oldest global equine care brand - Nearly 90 products are now produced all to the same high standard set respectively by Messrs Day & Martin, 1770 and Carr & Son, 1837 and have established Carr & Day & Martin firmly as the Number One horse care brand in the UK, with global appeal.

2019 - Carr & Day & Martin take a significant step to reduce plastic usage by introducing recyclable aluminium bottles, as part of their sustainability mission.
